How do you make a gallery wall?

A gallery wall is a curated display of photos, posters, or prints, creatively arranged on a wall with picture frames.

Gallery walls or photo walls have become popular in recent years and offer an easy way to update your interior, transform dull walls, create a focal point in your home and add some character and personality to your living space. Rather than using paint or wallpaper for a signature wall, you can do this with a gallery wall and it can be placed anywhere in the house, although popular spaces often take up the hallway, stairs, or living room.

1. Collect

Start creating a collection of things from original art to handmade prints to photos. When collecting, consider the size of your possible collection and the arrangement you want. Do you even want to keep them all big? Or work in a mix of different sizes? Find inspiration online, in your favorite cafes and restaurants, or at home shows and exhibitions.

2. Create a theme

When you have a selection that you’re happy with, pick your favorites and group them by theme, e.g. family, memorable places, happy events, or any other mix that means something to you. For art or prints, choose colors that match your room decor or that match the tone of the room you want to display them in.

3. Even or odd?

Determine if odd numbers of even numbers work the best. Sometimes even numbers in regulated groups of the same size work, but more random arrangements or collections work better with odd numbers.

4. Measure

Meet your wall surface and lay your collection on the floor. Stand back and look at them all together. Is something jumping out wrong? If so, get it out. Or is there room for you to add more? Take a picture of your possible combinations.

5. Choose your lists

When you’re happy with the layout, get your lists. You have to decide if you want them to blend in or contrast with the wall, or if they stand out on their own. Decide if you want them all exactly the same, or if you want many different colors. A white or neutral frame is perfect for Scandinavian-style interiors, while black picture frames are more suitable for modern or industrial-themed interiors.

Even think about collecting different styles of frames in the same color; this too can add interest. Will they have different sizes? If you’re buying artwork, it might be to buy framed pieces or ready to hang on canvases.

6. Determine the layout

Do you want neat rows or an organic arrangement? Look at your original photos – do the framed pieces still fit your plan? Do you have to exchange something? When you are satisfied, take another photo.
